<text>Big Mama Rag Primary Source Set
By Meredith Cunningham
Context: In 1972, the Coors Brewery in Golden, Colorado began to hire women. However, these
new workers were met with discriminatory practices. The clothing provided could easily snag on
machinery, bathroom breaks had to be planned 30 minutes in advance, and they were harassed
and discriminated against by their male coworkers. Sandra Haus, a pregnant worker, was not
allowed to move to a less labor intensive position until given a doctor’s note, which took two and
a half weeks. She was then placed on medical leave with 60% of her regular pay.
When the brewery workers went on strike in 1977, women and minority groups jumped on the
cause. The Velvet Hammer, a Denver Lesbian Feminist Bar, stopped serving Coors products.
The 1977 Chicana Conference in Boulder adopted a position in support of the boycott, as Coors
is a capitalist organization that oppressed women, minorities, and its workers.
Women and minority groups were essential to the success of the strike and boycott. In
California, sales dropped by 20% in the six months after the strike. The union had existed since
1930, but was controlled by the company. The union started to act independently from the
company after women, minority workers, and younger workers were hired.
Cultural and consumer products from the Denver lesbian feminist community came from these
events. “Boycott Coors” bumper stickers were sold at the Woman to Woman Feminist Book
Center. Working class lesbian feminist activist Kathy Kahn lent her voice to the movement and
released “Coors Brewery Strike Songs,” a protest record.
While women and minority groups were supportive of the boycott, conflicts occurred within the
larger LGBTQ+ community. At the 1977 Denver Gay Pride March, two male oriented gay bars
served a keg of Coors. Violence broke out when they were confronted by a group of radical
lesbians and some men. These events made it clear that unity within the Denver LGBTQ+
community was questionable.
The following year, a conservative faction of the Gay Community Center of Colorado voted to
retain Cara Heller and Gerry Gerash on the Board of Directors due to raising issues of sexism.
The faction accused them of spending too much time discussing the Coors Boycott. While
unsuccessful, the recall shows a continuation of division within the community. Coors was then
served at the 1979 gala opening for Colorado women in the arts month in Arvada center. Coors
had supplied the organizers with phones and materials in exchange for this service.
This document contains 13 articles from Big Mama Rag between 1975-1979 depicting these
events from a lesbian, feminist, and socialist perspective. The articles show how lesbian
feminists in 1970s Denver were able to form spaces to mobilize their political identities.
Reading guide: First read the questions for the three sub themes regarding space and business,
identity, class, and race, and culture and politics. Then, move on to reading the articles, taking
important notes and quotes. Draw your own conclusions to answer the questions.

Questions:
Space and Business
These sources deal with themes of authority and power. BMR was a socialist feminist
organization which made their world view in opposition to patriarchal corporate interests. In
1977, Coors Brewing Company was involved in a years-long battle with unions over labor
practices such as asking if people had ever been “communists, homosexuals, or socialists.”
How do these sources exemplify the differing perspectives of BMR, Coors, and women’s
voices? How is BMR showing solidarity of diverse groups based on the sources? What are
examples of solidarity? (Solidarity means support for different groups of women)
Identity, Class, and Race
Denver Lesbian Bars actively participated in the 1977 boycott of Coors while some Denver Gay
bars continued to serve these products.
Why did the lesbian feminist movement appear to be more involved in this effort? How do we
see an intersection of gender, race, and class in this boycott?
The “International Women’s Year ”Conference in 1975 appears as only a small concern for the
lesbian feminist cause.
Why was the community so wary of having too many members present at the conference? Why
was it important for those attending to organize together?
Culture and Politics
In the 1970s, lesbian feminists formed their own distinct culture, often revolving around women’s
music. The Colorado Women’s Music Festival was a product of this culture in the state. Despite
the significance of the event, many articles from BMR about it mention the conflicts that
occurred within the planning and execution.
How are these issues unique to the lesbian feminist Denver community of the 1970s? How does
the 1976 article compare to the 1978 article and showcase the changes and conflicts within the
community?
Kathy Kahn, a working class lesbian activist from Appalachia lent her voice to the movement
and released a record titled “Coors Brewery Strike Songs.” Coors used the Golden police force,
the FBI, and mainstream media to brutalize protestors. Kahn was accused by Channel 4 News
of being connected to the New World Liberation Front, a radical organization responsible for the
bombings of Coors plants over the past few years. Khan denied the accusations and took legal
action.
How was Coors able to use resources such as the FBI and the police to dismiss the strike? How
do they differ from the resources used by lesbian feminist organizations around the strike? What
pieces of evidence in the article support one side or the other and how do they compare? How
does the music from Coors Brewery Strike Songs offer a cultural response to the strike.
